Collections

So, I'm watching a show on Netflix called Clean House.  It has different families who have "clutter" issues, who need some help getting a handle on their "collections" and cleaning their houses up.  In return for cleaning their house and offering up their different items for a garage sale, they get a redecorated home.

I'm watching this one episode where the dad has a collection of Beanie Babies and baseball cards and toys, and his reasoning is that it was for his children's future.  I feel like I need to make a statement about that.

No, it's not.  It's for you.  It's because you like them.  One of the actors that is on the show made a very good point.  He asked if the dad knew the difference between a collection and a fad.  Beanie Babies are a fad.  Barbie Dolls have been a collectors item, but are closer to a fad now.  Baseball cards can be a collection.  There is a time and a place that those things might be worth saving and hanging on to, but when they take up space, when you can't sell them for what you think they are worth, when you think it is more important to save them for the money that isn't there instead of letting them be enjoyed, then let me state this plainly....   IT. IS. NOT. WORTH. IT!  And... it's a fad.

Let go of the stuff.  Let go of the junk.  Make memories with your kids.  If you really want to help your children's future, then teach them.  Teach them about God's word, teach them about finances, teach them about values.  Don't teach them to be hoarders.  Teach them that the stuff is not what means love.
