When will the novelty wear off?

DH and I decided last week that we are going to try homeschooling again. We had a conversation about Sweet Pea and our worries about possible bullies and bad attitudes. We decided that the best thing for our children is for us to take care of their education.

The original thought was to let Sweet Pea go to 5th grade and then we would start with 6th grade. By that time, Little Bit would be old enough to go to Kindergarten, and Sweet Pea and I would have uninterrupted school time.

But the more we talked to people, the more support we got, we understood that we needed to start as soon as we can. We're going to leave Sweet Pea in 4th grade, but we will start homeschooling her in 5th grade.

So that leaves Little Bit. What to do with her? The obvious answer is ... homeschool her as well. Thankfully, she is ready for preschool. But we don't have 2 vehicles, so we can't take her to school, so..... we're having school here.

I got a preK cirriculum book, and we have started "playing" school this week. We did half an hour on Tuesday, and we've "played" twice today for a bit over an hour. I'm glad Little Bit is having fun, but I wonder..... when will the novelty wear off? When is it going to start being difficult getting her to "play?"

So, if I don't blog as much, you know why. I'm in school.

Hugs,
Melinda

  2. You go girl. I'm hear for you. You know to call me when you feel like quitting. The first year is the hardest. My friend in blog world who talked me into it a long time ago is at Tickleberry Farms, over in my links. She has a world of knowledge. You can go introduce yourself. She's as sweet as can be.

  4. Hm. I don't know about being a *world* of knowledge ... but I do claim to have a market in the vast receptacle of knowledge. ;o)

I'm thankful you're taking the leap of faith into home education. An important set of points would be: you cannot give from an empty well. It's important to have consistent non-school days planned out for you to refresh, renew and rejuvenate yourself. Ditching is cool even in homeschool. Some days you really need it, just make sure you do something fun! Less is more when it comes to curriculum. Choose carefully and prayerfully.

    Blessings,

  5. Melinda,

Welcome to the world of homeschooling! I have 3 boys, ages 11, 10, & 8, and we just completed our very FIRST year of homeschooling after leaving the public schools behind. Just remember: you can do this. Come on over to my blog and you can see how our journey went. I'll bookmark you and check back to see how you are doing. There's a lot of very supportive women out there (including/especially Jane, above, who's helped me too). The best thing we did this year was join a homeschool coop so my boys could take classes there and interact with other kids. We had just moved to a new area and they didn't have the opportunity to make new friends since we are homeschooling, but here they made great new friends who are fantastic influences. Whew, sorry such a long comment.

    Have fun with this!

  6. Hey if you need any help and support let me know. I've got lots of great resources you can use. www.starfall.com is a FANTASTIC website you can use to start teaching reading at a preschool age. It starts out with just the alphabet and works its way up to read full stories. They even have a shop where you can buy books and packets to go along with the interactive features. If I was homeschooling, I would use it!
